Refrigerator Thermostat

If you have ever experienced frozen food syndrome, you might know your way around a refrigerator thermostat fairly well. For those that are just encountering this problem, there is a solution in sight.

Sometimes the biggest problem is also the most obvious. If you find that your refrigerator thermostat is behaving strangely, you might want to give that dial a peek. Family members can change the dial without your knowledge causing your fridge to be too hot or too cold. If the actual temperature doesn’t seem to be the problem, you will have to investigate a bit further. The next step is to unplug your refrigerator in order to begin working on it.

Find the control panel inside of your fridge. Then, take away any food items that might be near it, so that you can work with ease. The actual thermostat should be located right behind the dial, but you might need a flashlight in order to see it. Take away the plastic cover on the dial, and look behind it. Sometimes, covers can be screwed into place, while other times they can simply snap off. Next, turn the dial all the way to the coldest setting. Then, remove the two wires that are covering the thermostat. Using a volt-ohm reader, test the probes in order to find out if they are working.

You should see a reading of zero on the reader. If you find that a reading of zero shows up, you can continue to investigate. If not, this might be the issue, and you’ll have to replace the wires. You can also remove the thermostat completely, set it inside of a working freezer for thirty minutes, and then test the thermostat again. If you find that the reader hits infinity, it is working as it should be. If not, you have to replace the thermostat completely. There can be other reasons why your refrigerator thermostat might not be functioning as it should, so check the coils and other components as well.

Most of the time, the thermostat simply needs to be replaced. The simple test mentioned above will help you to determine if this is the cause of all that frozen food.

There’s nothing more frustrating than spoiling all of your expensive food due to a malfunctioning thermostat. With a few simple checks, this refrigerator thermostat problem can be solved in no time.
