Refrigerator Leaks

Refrigerator leaks can happen for three reasons. Since the exact location of the leak is not hard to detect, this is one repair that does not require a repair man.

Begin by inspecting the seal around the refrigerator door. Wet a large rag with soapy water, and run the rag around the seal of the door loosening any build-up from dirt, debris, or food. Once this has been done, look at the seal and try to find out if there are any cracks or holes in it. If you find any cracks or holes, you will have to call your fridge manufacturer to order another part. If the seal of the door doesn’t seem to be responsible for those refrigerator leaks, it’s time to take a look at the drip pan.

At the bottom of your fridge you will fan that there is a removable panel. Remove the panel from the fridge, and locate the drip pan using a flash light. Once you have found the pan, remove it from the fridge carefully (don’t spill all of that water!). Take the pan to your kitchen sink in order to wash it thoroughly with soapy water. While you are washing the pan, inspect it for possible holes or cracks. To make sure that your pan is not broken, fill it once more with water to see if any of the water leaks out. If water begins to leak through the pan, you will have to purchase a new pan.

The next possible cause of those refrigerator leaks is your ice maker. To check the hose that runs to your fridge from the wall, locate the hose with a flash light (it is usually made from plastic). Also, be sure to turn the water supply to the hose off…just in case water begins to leak all over your kitchen. Look at the hose that runs to the wall, the hose that runs into the fridge (on the back of the unit), and the hose that runs up the top of the fridge. If you notice any water leaking, you have found the source of the problem. Sometimes, you can simply adjust the screws with a wrench in order to stop the leak. If you find a cut in the hose, simply head to the hardware store to replace it.

See how easy it is to find a leak? Make sure to go to all the possible spots that a leak could be coming from. If you can fix your fridge on your own, you can certainly save a lot of money.

Sometimes a fridge will require a professional repair man. However, most of the time refrigerator leaks can be discovered on your own. Take the time to find that leak, fix it, and move on with your life.
