Energy Star Freezers
What are Energy Star freezers? You have probably heard this term time and again, yet it doesn’t mean that much to you unless you know what it means, right?
Energy Star freezers refer to those freezers that have been named energy efficient by the government. What does energy efficient mean? Unlike older freezers that will raise your energy bill in a flash, these units tend to conserve lots of energy. Why is this important? Not only is conserving energy good for the world around you, it is also good for your energy bill. The Energy Star label looks like a small blue star, and it is the one thing that you should always look for when shopping for a new freezing system.
These models use compressors that are highly efficient, insulation that has been greatly improved, and temperature controls that are incredibly accurate. Additionally, these units use 10% less energy than regular units do, and they use 20% less energy than those older (pre 2001) models do. Most of these systems come in a number of styles, but they are confined to upright models with automatic defrost; upright models with manual defrost; and chest freezers with manual defrost. If you want to save even more money on your electric bill, there are a few more energy saving tips that you can follow.
When setting up your Energy Star freezers, make sure to place them away from any heat source (oven, dishwasher, or sunlight). Also, leave a nice big space between the wall and the coils in order to allow air to flow around the coils without interruption. Of course, keeping your freezer at the right temperature is also important when it comes to conserving, so make sure that your thermometer is working properly. Try and keep the door to the freezer closed most of the time, and if you are going to open it be sure to shut it right away. Lastly, be sure that the freezer door seals are always tight. Sometimes, these seals can come loose, so make sure to check them often. These small tips may seem really simple, but they work wonders when it comes to saving you a bundle of money.
You can find these freezing units at most appliance stores. Just ask a sales person for an Energy Star unit in order to see the options available to you. If you still have an older freezer, look into various government and state recycling programs…most of the time, you will be rewarded for getting rid of that older system. Also, you may find that you don’t even have to move it yourself…look on your state website for more information.
There are many great reasons why Energy Star freezers should be selected above all the rest. If you are tired of paying a high energy bill, make sure that your next system includes that colorful little star.
