Compressed Air Powered Refrigerator

A compressed air powered refrigerator may seem like a strange idea, but when you think of the way that a fridge is made it all begins to make sense.

A refrigerator cannot function without a compressor. What is a compressor? This contraption is basically a pump that is operated by a motor. The motor might be powered by electricity or by some other form of energy. In order for a refrigerator to push the refrigerant around inside of it (refrigerant is a liquid that makes the appliance cool), it must contain a compressor. Thus, a compressed air powered refrigerator is not such a farfetched idea after all.

The main thing that many conservationists are trying to change is the way that the motor is powered. Since refrigerators tend to be the most energy consuming appliance within any household, it makes sense to exchange the electricity powered motor for something more economical. Many scientists are experimenting with other forms of energy. Some people believe that solar power is the way to go, while others believe that wind power might work. Either way, it is merely a matter of time before a refrigeration unit that does not use electricity is invented. In fact, some of these appliances already exist, though they are still in the beginning stages of invention.

Another component of the fridge that many are trying to find a replacement for is the actual refrigerant. Presently, refrigerant is extremely dangerous. Older refrigerators contained a refrigerant that was actually toxic. While this problem has been solved, today’s refrigerators can suck the oxygen from a room if it is allowed to leak. Of course, this can result in suffocation, which is why an older, damaged, refrigerator should never be used. In fact, older fridges should not be used for a number of reasons, no matter how great they look. Though older refrigerators are still compressed air powered refrigerators, they are not the same thing as today’s appliances are.

Older refrigerators tend to use a lot more electricity than a new fridge does. This means that by replacing your older fridge for an energy efficient one, you can save money and help the environment.

As you can see, there is nothing out of the ordinary about a compressed air powered refrigerator, though the process by which a fridge works can be changed for the better.
