The very first dishwasher was invented in 1886 by Josephine Cochrane. Cochrane was the granddaughter of John Fitch, who happened to be the inventor of the steamboat. Since Fitch was able to amass a fortune during his steamboat venture, the members of his family never had to work. However, Josephine was quite upset over the fact that her servants kept chipping her fine china, so she worked on an invention that would wash dishes without the clumsy hands of a servant. At the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, Josephine unveiled her invention. When were dishwashers invented as we know them? Well, not too long after Josephine’s invention, the permanent dishwasher arrived on the scene.
Dishwashers that included permanent plumbing began to surface around the 1920s. However, it was not until 1937 that the first home sized washer appeared. A man by the name of William Howard Livens created a home model that many people purchased. This model was just like the ones that we have today, though it did not include any electric drying components. Around the 1940s, various drying parts were added to the machine. By the time the Seventies had rolled around, nearly every American home had a dishwasher.
When were dishwashers invented? Well, now you know. Although this invention was originally created by the very wealthy, it is now something that most of us cannot live without. In fact, hardly any home buyer would consider purchasing a house without a dishwasher inside of it. The truth is that we have come so used to Josephine’s earlier invention that most of us would never even think about washing dishes by hand. Then again, there is no reason to ever wash a dirty dish unless you don’t happen to have a dishwasher. From industrial settings to home settings, this machine is something that we use every day as a society.
Imagine what Josephine would have thought if she knew that every person now owned her machine. Even though it was invented to keep servants from ruining fine china, this machine is now used to wash everything in sight.
